SUMMARY:Webinar: Communication: It's More than Words
DESCRIPTION:Communication can be categorized into three basic types: (1) verbal communication\, in which you listen to a person to understand their meaning; (2) written communication\, in which you read their meaning; and (3) nonverbal communication\, in which you observe a person and infer meaning. (https://open.lib.umn.edu/principlesmanagement) Communication involves two of the five senses; sight and hearing. What happens if one or both senses are taken away? Is communication still possible? These questions will be explored through an experiential activity. Participation is essential to fully benefit from this shared discussion. \nPresented by: Donna Harris\, MSW

SUMMARY:Webinar: Setting Boundaries with Children

SUMMARY:Webinar: What Every Parent Needs to Know about Self-Harming
DESCRIPTION:Description: \nDid you know self-harming behaviors are actually common for children who have experienced trauma?  Self-harming is not a suicide attempt\, but it is a cry for help/attention\, it is a maladaptive way of coping because it brings temporary relief to their emotional distress.  There is a vicious cycle that happens when a child self-harm.  After the act of self-harm\, there is a brief sense of relief immediately followed by feelings of guilt and shame which create more emotional distress and this is how the cycle continues.  This interactive workshop will give parents the skills they need to understand the act of self-harm\, how to identify self-harming behaviors\, and how to provide support to a child that is self-harming. \nObjectives: \n1.      Parents will learn about self-harm and the cause of self-harming behaviors. \n2.      Parents will learn how to identify self-harming behaviors. \n3.      Parents will learn how to support their child(ren) who is self-harming.

SUMMARY:Webinar: It's Complicated
DESCRIPTION:Relationships can be complex\, and death does not end our complicated relationship with others. How do we help both children and adults process their grief when the relationship with the deceased was less than perfect? These complications may be due to the person’s substance use\, estrangement\, abandonment\, or divorce\, just to name a few. In addition\, family members may have different feelings about the person who died\, making it difficult to share “good” memories. This training will discuss strategies to support children and adults as they grieve these complicated relationships. \nPresented by Lane Pease Henrdicks\, Kates Club

SUMMARY:Webinar: The Impact of Abuse on Child Development
DESCRIPTION:Trauma in early developmental stages has an impact on a child’s brain and cognitive development\, even increasing the risk for continued trauma down the road. We’ll discuss the impact trauma can have on brain/cognitive development\, social and emotional development as well as academic achievements and identify ways as a foster parent you can support these youth through education and continued skills training. Although it will take time\, research has shown that caregivers who are attentive to the needs of the child\, model positive relationships\, and are open to collaborating with other trauma-focused resources\, can help these children/youth overcome adversity and promote healthier and improved outcomes for children and their families. \nPresented by:  Jenie Christopher\, MS\, LPC

SUMMARY:Webinar: Healthy and Effective Ways To Helping Parents Facilitate Sibling Connection
DESCRIPTION:Sibling bonding is very important; however\, it doesn’t happen automatically with biological siblings\, foster or adoptive children. Approximately two-thirds of children in foster care in the United States have a sibling also in care which could potentially cause a child to feel alone or abandoned in their new home.  Feeling abandoned and alone may create a high level of hesitancy in a child\, making it difficult for them to create a connection with other children in a home.  With that being said\, it’s important for parents to understand that the process of bonding is the same whether it is bonding between biological siblings\, foster siblings\, foster parents and or other family members. \nIn addition\, being related by blood doesn’t mean a bond will automatically happen.  Sibling connections only take place with time and with parents being intentional about creating a safe\, nonjudgmental\, and loving environment.  This webinar will give parents effective tips on how to create a home that facilitates and promotes sibling connection.  The webinar will also give parents the pitfalls of not trusting the process and taking the microwave approach instead of the crock-pot approach. \nPresented by: Natasha LaMarr\, Ed.D\, LPC\, NCC
