Date/time: Tuesday, April 16, 2024 | 6:00 PM EST

Presenter: Ronald Dunham, Community Relations Representative

Today’s adolescents and young men are facing dilemmas in this ever-changing world. Many of them are having to grow up faster and make decisions they are not necessarily prepared for. These decisions include but are not limited to perceptions on masculinity, physical health, mental health, and how to support themselves when transitioning to adulthood. To make things even more challenging adolescents and young men who are involved with foster care, DJJ, or have been adopted have additional factors to account for such as stability and embracing a new support system. Amerigroup understand this plight and we are invested in seeing our male members strive within their complex environment. We want to assist them in changing the prevailing perceptions that have plagued this gender for centuries and increase their awareness on topics related to whole person health.

Image result for mental health mattersDepression Part II: Who gets depression?

Depression can affect people of all ages, races, ethnicities, and genders.

Women are diagnosed with depression more often than men, but men can also be depressed. Because men may be less likely to recognize, talk about, and seek help for their feelings or emotional problems, they are at greater risk of depression symptoms being undiagnosed or undertreated. Studies also show higher rates of depression and an increased risk for the disorder among members of the LGBTQI+ community.

What are the signs and symptoms of depression?

If you have been experiencing some of the following signs and symptoms, most of the day, nearly every day, for at least 2 weeks, you may be experiencing depression:

  • Persistent sad, anxious, or “empty” mood
  • Feelings of hopelessness or pessimism
  • Feelings of irritability, frustration, or restlessness
  • Feelings of guilt, worthlessness, or helplessness
  • Loss of interest or pleasure in hobbies and activities
  • Decreased energy, fatigue, or feeling slowed down
  • Difficulty concentrating, remembering, or making decisions
  • Difficulty sleeping, waking early in the morning, or oversleeping
  • Changes in appetite or unplanned weight changes
  • Physical aches or pains, headaches, cramps, or digestive problems that do not have a clear physical cause and do not go away with treatment
  • Thoughts of death or suicide or suicide attempts

If you or someone you know is struggling or having thoughts of suicide, call or text the 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline at 988 or chat at 988lifeline.org.  In life-threatening situations, call 911.  To learn more about depression visit, https://www.nimh.nih.gov/health/topics/depression

Weekly Mindful Moment: Take a deep breath and let yourself settle into the present moment. Feel the rhythm of your breath, grounding you in the here and now. With each inhale, invite a sense of calm and clarity to wash over you, and with each exhale, release any tension or distractions that may be lingering.

Now, bring your awareness to the concept of authenticity. What does it mean to you to live authentically? Allow yourself to reflect on your values, your passions, and your true self. Embrace the uniqueness of who you are, recognizing that authenticity is found in embracing your genuine thoughts, feelings, and actions.

As you continue to breathe deeply, imagine yourself shedding the layers of expectation and societal pressure, revealing the pure essence of your being. Embrace the freedom that comes from living authentically, honoring your inner truth without fear or hesitation. With each mindful breath, reaffirm your commitment to authenticity. Embrace the beauty of your true self, knowing that by living authentically, you invite greater connection, fulfillment, and joy into your life. Take a moment to bask in the sense of empowerment and liberation that comes from honoring your authenticity. When you’re ready, gently open your eyes, carrying this mindful awareness with you as you navigate the rest of your day.

Depression Part 1: What is depression?

Depression (also known as major depression, major depressive disorder, or clinical depression) is a common but serious mood disorder. It causes severe symptoms that affect how a person feels, thinks, and handles daily activities, such as sleeping, eating, or working. To be diagnosed with depression, the symptoms must be present for at least 2 weeks.

  • There are different types of depression, some of which develop due to specific circumstances:

Major depression includes symptoms of depressed mood or loss of interest, most of the time for at least 2 weeks, that interfere with daily activities.

  • Persistent depressive disorder (also called dysthymia or dysthymic disorder) consists of less severe symptoms of depression that last much longer, usually for at least 2 years.
  • Perinatal depression is depression that occurs during or after pregnancy. Depression that begins during pregnancy is prenatal depression and depression that begins after the baby is born is postpartum depression.
  • Seasonal affective disorder is depression that comes and goes with the seasons, with symptoms typically starting in the late fall and early winter and going away during the spring and summer.

Depression with symptoms of psychosis is a severe form of depression in which a person experiences psychosis symptoms, such as delusions (disturbing, false fixed beliefs) or hallucinations (hearing or seeing things others do not hear or see).  If you suspect you’re dealing with depression, seeking professional help or confiding in a trusted friend or family member is important for support.  Also, click the link to Find Help and resources in your local community.
