Changing Gordon County for the better, one child at a time.
Our programs are based on and provide each child and their family with love and support. The goal of the Winners Club and our families is to help each child become a Winner. We believe that every child possesses, the ability to become, a winner at something, in his or her life. We realize that not every child is fortunate enough to have a nurturing environment at home. Our goal is to become an extension to the child’s family. We strive to become a family in which the children and their families know they are loved, they know that others care about them, and that they as individuals matter. Our goal is to provide this loving and tutoring environment for each child.
The Winner’s Club serves disadvantage and at-risk children and youth from age 0 to 21. Many have mental, physical, or emotional challenges that are adversely affected by their family situations. We provide them with mentoring, self-esteem building, a family support system, community involvement, and individualized tutoring to enhance their educational performance. The Winner’s Club began serving youth in Gordon County in 1969. The Club was first started to provide a Boy Scout Troup Physically and Mentally Challenged Boys in Gordon County. Within the first year, The Winner’s Club began serving physically and mentally challenged girls as well. Also, within the first years our Mission widened as we began serving the abused and children with behavioral challenges.
Tutoring Program
The Winner’s Club offers tutoring to all winners two nights a week. Tutoring nights consists of helping with homework, educational learning experiences, and “gap work” in the areas of English, Writing, Math, Science, Social Studies, Geography, and History. By providing educational learning experiences, each winner has the opportunity to participate in STEM projects and games with a “hands on” learning experience.
Enrichment
The Winner’s Club seeks out enrichment opportunities for our winners each year. Past activities have included, field trips, swimming, attending the local fair, and the opportunity to participate in the club sponsored summer camp. Summer camp activities have included activities such as bowling, tennis lessons, jump-in-play, art lessons, and pickleball.
Service
The Winner’s Club believes that the best way to feel better about yourself is to help someone else. Our winners participate in several service projects each year. Past projects have included making items and personally delivering them to the local nursing homes, preparing Valentine care packages for local children who are sick, making shoeboxes for Samaritan’s Purse, and collecting items for the less fortunate in the mountains of Kentucky.
Mentoring
Although a winner is mentored throughout their time at The Winner’s Club. The club has two designated “fun” nights where the children have an opportunity to engage in structured games, craft activities, music lessons, and immersive learning experiences. During that club time, each winner has an opportunity to interact with our director, volunteers, and peer mentors. It is The Winner’s Club philosophy that each child can be a winner at something. Exposing the winners to different activities helps the club identify a child’s strength’s so they can be developed. Mentoring also includes helping our winners master the character traits necessary to become good citizens. The club nights also foster opportunities for the winners to use good social skills as they learn to interact with others in a positive way.
