About Course

Foster and adoptive parents are an extremely diverse community of people with one thing in common: the desire to love, nurture and care for children and youth. Many parents may not realize that LGBTQ youth are over represented in foster care and are at higher risks of rejection and harm while in care. This webinar will first explain key terms and concepts that all foster/adoptive parents need to know in order to better understand LGBTQ youth. Research on the importance of providing affirming homes for these youth, as well as concrete tips for how to be affirming will then be presented. Presented by: Karey Scheyed, MPA

Instructor Karey Scheyd, MPA gave a very powerful presentation regarding caring for LGBTQ youths. My knowledge of caring and associating with this population was very limited. I have worked with some LGBT personnel and had wonderful experiences. The information given today highlighted a lot more on men and women falling under this category. I was very interested in finding out more information on how to address and not stigmatize or discriminate against this population. Thank you for all of the information given in this course.

Instructor - Dr Karey Scheyd presented information on
caring for LGBTQ youths. I never discriminated against anyone because of the sexual preferences. Taking this class has answered many of my questions. People will be who they are according to their sexual preferences or who they want to be identified as and no one has the authority to condemned another person. This decision is left up to God, our maker. i really appreciated this class very much because of the wealth of information associated with LGBTQ, SOGIE, GAYS, LESBIANS TRANSGENDERS and other groups that I was not aware of who they are and what they meant to society. I am pleased with the knowledge I received on youths and young ones coming into foster care and how they can be helped.
